What Nest UK is

Nest UK is a free tool that shows crime, flood risk, schools, transport and local amenities around an address or postcode in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is built and run by Billion Studio, a small independent UK business. It uses open data, so it can be incomplete or out of date. It is not advice on whether to rent or buy: always visit the area yourself.

Where the data comes from

• Crime: data.police.uk (Open Government Licence v3.0)
• Flood risk and warnings: Environment Agency (Open Government Licence)
• Schools: Department for Education, Get Information about Schools, plus OpenStreetMap
• House prices: HM Land Registry UK House Price Index
• Social housing: Census 2021 (Office for National Statistics) and Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
• Shops, food, stations, roads, bus routes and the map: © OpenStreetMap contributors
• Live buses: DfT Bus Open Data Service. Weather: MET Norway

What happens to the addresses you search

We have no accounts and we do not ask for your name or email. To answer a search, the address or postcode you type, or the map coordinates found from it, is sent to public services that supply the data. These include postcodes.io, OpenStreetMap (Nominatim and Overpass), police.uk, the Environment Agency, HM Land Registry, MET Norway and the DfT Bus Open Data Service. Some of these requests go through our own server on Cloudflare, which hosts this site. Each of those services has its own privacy policy. Please do not search for an address you would not want to look up through them.

If you use the Share button, the address is put in the link, so anyone you send the link to can see it.

Cookies and storage on your device

Nest UK sets no cookies and shows no advertising. It uses your browser’s local storage only to remember your language, day or night mode, and your last few searches. These stay on your device. You can clear them in your browser settings, or with the Clear button beside Recent searches.

Anonymous usage counts

We count which features are used (for example language, topic tabs, map layers and failed lookups) so that we can improve the tool. Each count holds only an event name, a short label, two numbers and the visitor’s country as worked out by Cloudflare. It holds no cookie, no identifier, no IP address and no address. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, we do not send any counts.

Other services your browser contacts

To load the page, your browser also fetches fonts from Google Fonts, map code from unpkg, and map tiles from OpenStreetMap, OpenFreeMap or Esri. Those providers can see your IP address and browser details when they do this. This site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes requests to deliver it.
